Javier Diaz exudes charm and warmth. It’s clear he truly enjoys what he does. “To me, everyone has their own beauty. I love to bring out that individual beauty,” says Javier. As Master Hairdresser at the newly renovated Salon Jaafar Tazi, Javier says he “does it all – hair color, cutting and make-up.” Javier has been working in beauty for 29 years, first around his native Camuy, Puerto Rico and for the last 18 in Greenwich. His work has been featured in photo shoots, fashions shows, beauty pageants, weddings and galas.
He took a few minutes during the uber busy holiday season to share some of his tips. One of Javier’s winter secrets for super shiny tame hair is “reversing the process.” Apply conditioner first (even better if it’s to dry hair!), rinse and then shampoo. Javier says, “It helps hair look fuller and eliminates static.” Javier likes hair down, smooth with hint of wave, and finished with Oribe Shine Light Reflecting Spray for added gloss. Crystals and extensions are favorites to make hair party-ready. When it comes to hair color, warm is better and glaze is a must. “Heat and hot water take a toll on hair in the winter and glaze helps color stay on longer.”
Even though it’s holiday, the look is dewy and natural for skin. Javier recommends picking a foundation one shade lighter than your natural skin tone. “It keeps skin looking fresh without using a lot of product and lets it breathe.” For night, Javier amps up the drama with longer eyelashes and lash extensions. Whether you choose shades of brown or go brighter with reds, lips should “big, beautiful, and full.”
Javier’s last secret: relax and take a deep breath. He’s thrilled about the salon’s new color bar where clients can enjoy coffee and cappuccino and be social. “It let’s me be involved with clients during the entire process.” And being involved is the hallmark of this master.
