SUMMARY:The Late Summer Show
DESCRIPTION:Heather Gaudio Fine Art is pleased to present The Late Summer Show\, a three-person exhibition featuring new works by Sophie Kitching\, Jae Ko and Matthew Shlian. The show dates are August 22nd -October 3rd.   \nExhibiting for the first time at the gallery\, Sophie Kitching will be presenting new paintings from the “Invisible Green” series\, among others. The French-British artist directs her multi-media practice around architecture\, nature and the environment\, inspired by found objects\, color and form. In her captivating botanical landscapes sourced from memory\, decorative patterns and nature\, space plays an equally important part as the depicted motifs\, allowing the viewer to navigate their eye between and through prismatic gestural flora\, fauna and ensuing drips. It is the very presence of the intended space that makes way for a joyful balance to the playful\, harmonious composition. Since earning her Master’s degree from the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris\, Kitching has enjoyed numerous group and solo exhibitions here and abroad and has been the recipient of several awards. The artist has also participated in residencies in France and the United States\, and she published a monograph “Nuits Américaines” with Lienart in 2017\, among other publications. Her work is in many notable private collections in the United States and Europe. Kitching lives and works in New York City. \nKorean born artist Jae Ko is renowned for transforming paper and Sumi inks from their traditional usage and recontextualizing them into stunning three-dimensional objects.  Ko combines the two materials to create abstract sculptural forms that take on the appearance of organic structures. For this exhibition\, the artist will present a new series of adding machine paper spools that have been meticulously spliced into cross sections and misted with copious amounts of fine Sumi ink. The sprayed layers of color cause the paper to open and fan out in unexpected ways\, allowing the works to take on the appearance of microorganisms\, cross sections of wood and other imagined natural forms. Ko has had a prolific career with numerous exhibitions in the United States\, Europe\, and Asia.  Her works are in many important public and private collections including the Corcoran Gallery of Art\, the Phillips Collection\, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington\, D.C. and more recently acquired by the Baltimore Museum of Art.  \nAudiences will recognize another gallery roster artist who works with paper to create remarkable three-dimensional objects\, Matthew Shlian.  The similarity with Jae Ko ends there\, however\, for his technique and approach to the medium is vastly different.  The Michigan-based artist begins his process by drawing patterns in a notebook and uses digital mapping on an industrial plotter to work out his ideas. He then moves to paper to puzzle out his concepts using his hands\, constructing shapes\, geometric assemblages and modular aggregations that can reference architectural or natural patterns.  For the artist\, chance and the element of surprise is an important part of the process as he develops his concepts. For this exhibition\, Shlian will present new geometric abstract works alongside vessels where color\, light\, patterns and planar shifts come together. Shlian has collaborated with scientists at the University of Michigan contributing to the visualization of various projects\, his sculptural forms presenting answers to questions about science and nature that had not yet been formulated by his colleagues.  He holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy and has held several teaching positions. The artist has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions\, and his work is in many notable private and corporate collections.

SUMMARY:Ian McKeever: Going Forth\, Painted Panels & Other Works
DESCRIPTION:Heather Gaudio Fine Art is pleased to present Ian McKeever: Going Forth\, Painted Panels & Other Works\, the artist’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. The show will open with an artist reception on October 10\, 4-6pm\, and runs through December 5th. \nIan McKeever is an acclaimed British artist whose distinguished career is marked primarily as an abstract painter.  He works serially\, simultaneously developing several paintings that take several years to complete.  Each series is characterized with its own identity\, inspired by nature\, art history or culturally historic works\, and all share the artist’s preoccupation with light\, transparency and the bodily presence.  \nThe two predominant series featured in the exhibition are the new Going Forth paintings and the continuing Painted Panels which the artist began in 2012. \nFollowing his five-year engagement with the Henge Paintings\, which were preoccupied with mass and volume\, the color black predominantly featured and integral in depicting density\, solidity and weight\, McKeever felt compelled to return his inquiry into openness\, transparency\, and luminosity. In the Going Forth series\, McKeever re-investigates translucid lyrical abstractions\, this time presented in multi-paneled canvases in a mostly white palette.  A singular richly saturated color\, such as field green or deep navy blue\, asserts structure and balance\, and emphasizes transparency by appearing dusky beneath thinly veiled layers of white. McKeever applies translucid films of acrylic and oil in a manner that implies the luminosity of light\, rather than pictorially depicting it.  In this way\, the artist renders a nebulous\, ephemeral quality to the surface\, a perceptual experience he has long articulated.  For McKeever\, the Going Forth paintings loosely suggest passages of time. “I am yesterday\, today and tomorrow”\, he states\, in that when he paints\, he is taking the present into the painting and then returns to it in the tomorrow.  “You are encapsulating the creative process going forth into the future” when you paint the following day. The horizontal format of the painting suggests a narrative\, a passageway\, a continuation of time.  \nThe Painted Panels are an ongoing series of monochromatic black or white paintings the artist began in 2012.  McKeever returns to canvases he has “abandoned” or set aside when he feels they have “lost their way.” He selects the sections he deems successful and mounts the fragments onto wooden panel\, reinvestigating them minimally or extensively to a level of conclusion.  The canvases take on a new life from the one originally intended resulting in beautiful\, elegant paintings that contrast with the warmth of the wooden panels. They still evoke his preoccupation with luminosity inherent to painting.  All panels are alike in size and work well together in a grouping and equally hold their own as a single\, stand-alone tableau.  McKeever first exhibited this body of work as an installation of 30 at the Kunst-Station Sankt Peter in Cologne in 2014. For the artist\, this ‘recycling’ series allows him to pivot from the larger scaled work providing an alternative meditative\, creative channel. \nOther paintings on view\, the Season Addendum and “one-off” canvases\, as dubbed by McKeever\, depict his signature visual abstract lexicon. These latter singular paintings act as turning points\, interim periods which may become the genesis and develop into a new grouping as the creative juices flow in the artist’s studio. \nMcKeever has had a prolific career with many solo and group exhibitions in numerous galleries and museums.
