Susie Orman Schnall’s recommendations for our LOOK Hot List for the Holidays include her latest novel,  We Came Here to Shine, among other great reads and a fun Hulu series to binge for the holiday season.

We Came Here to Shine by Susie Orman Schnall
“Set at the wondrous 1939 World’s Fair, Orman Schnall’s latest, We Came Here to Shine, bursts like a technicolor movie right off the page, as her two heroines battle for their rights in what’s very much a man’s world, forging a remarkable bond in the process. An ode to female friendship that pulses with momentum and left me breathless.”
—Fiona Davis, national bestselling author of The Address and The Chelsea Girls

Untamed by Glennon Doyle
According to People, who named this a Book of the Week, “Doyle might just be the patron saint of female empowerment. Here she inspires other women to listen to their intuition and break free of what cages them. Her memoir has a message as clear as a ‘go’ signal: Find and honor your truest self.” I have now listened to and read this book, underlining like a maniac as I go. It has really resonated with me and has made me rethink a lot of what I’ve always assumed to be true about myself and my place in society as a woman.

The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
A Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, this novel tells the story of henna artist Lakshmi and her struggle for fulfillment in a society pivoting between the traditional and the modern. This book transported me into a world I was entirely unfamiliar with. I also heard the author speak and loved listening to her stories about the writing process for this book and her inspiration to take on the subject matter.

Fast Girls by Elise Hooper
I raced through this fast-paced novel on an exhilarating journey that begins with the humble beginnings of promising female runners and culminates in their inspiring and obstacle-filled quests for Olympic glory. It’s perfect for readers who want to be motivated by strong women and their pursuit of seemingly-impossible dreams. Elise and I did a number of book events together as our books embrace similar themes, are during the same time period, and even have a few overlapping characters! Her research is so thorough and the lives of the women she features are fascinating.
