One of my all time favorite ways to exercise is getting outside and making Mother Nature my workout partner. Fitness trends are showing that more and more people are opting out of the studio and large gym workouts and focused more on what they can do outdoors in any climate. Obviously a winter storm isn’t exactly ideal (yet go shovel the driveway and, trust me, your body will be sore). However, make sure you use your legs. Your back will thank you. Exercise is an antidepressant and being outdoors makes it that much more exhilarating.
One company that has clearly cornered the market and is always on the forefront of next level staying fit, is Peloton. I own a Peloton bike which I’ve never actually used. It’s more useful for my husband, whose time is limited when it comes to working out. Peloton launched in 2012 as a luxury stationary bike brand with fitness instruction, otherwise known as the “Netflix of Fitness.” However, in a short amount of time they have expanded their brand into almost all forms of fitness. They have added a treadmill to their equipment and their instructors cover other workouts, like: bootcamp, meditation, strength, stretching, yoga, walking and running. Their amazing app now has an outdoor portion. There are an extremely large number of programs to choose from depending on your goals, i.e. HIIT runs, marathon training, warm-ups and even an all Madonna run. The instructor is right alongside of you doing the workout audio only. I decided to give it a go a 30 minute HIIT run with an instructor that looks like a gazelle. I was running with people from all over the US and the best part… I followed it completely and never caved. Sometimes it’s nice to let someone else take the reigns and enjoy your inner thoughts under the beautiful sky.
I follow a number of celebrities who have defied the aging Gods. Most,if not all, get outdoors. I recently attended a Lenny Kravitz concert. He is 55 years old and has a physical appearance of a 25 year old. I, of course, had to research. He sticks to a vegetarian diet and has a fitness regimen that gets him outdoors as much as possible. He runs, hikes, works on upper body and lower body boot camps all outdoors. His combination of fresh air, vitamin D(sun), cardio and isometric fitness clearly pays off.
Peloton is on to something and has proven in the industry of fitness that they are looking to grow and create a stronger healthier world. Get to it and enjoy the outdoors, no matter if it’s warm or cold, one can always layer!
