Penny Putnam’s is the classic American story: small town girl from the Midwest (and then the South) goes to New York City to chase a career. A 35 year immersion in graphic design followed. Working initially for Raymond Loewy, the famous industrial designer, and eventually opening her own boutique package design firm.

“Along the way I fell in love with a wonderful man from Boston. When we visited a friend in Belle Haven one lovely June evening in 1989, my spouse asked …’why aren’t we living here?’ Why Not! I had several clients in Greenwich and the commute into the city was easy. Six months later we bought our home in that very neighborhood and my husband, Frederic (aka Bucky) established his business here.”

Penny and Bucky raised their son, Nat in Greenwich. He attended Greenwich Country Day School and Greenwich High School. He now lives in Aspen, Colorado with his wife, Maria, where they are both involved in the restaurant business.

Penny began her second career as a fine artist when she retired from package design in 1999. She describes her paintings as, “explorations into the natural world of color, texture, and light and how we react to these things. I love a solitary walk in the woods or on a beach and the small things I find there… sticks and stones, feathers and shells, have informed both my art and my approach to living…. finding connections and respecting the simple beauty that surrounds us. My art is all about our surroundings. The world is a beautiful yet mysterious place. I’m fascinated by the texture, color and evidence of time inherent in the small things I find along my way.”

Downing Yudain welcomes Penny Putnam and her paintings, “Conversations in Light and Color” to their gallery in The Barn. Gallerist and Downing Yudain partner, Lily Downing interviewed Penny about her work in this video.
